What’s Going On Before iForum Kick-off

I’m in Las Vegas at the moment attending the Citrix iForum. I’ve been fortunate enough to be selected as an official Citrix Community Blogger. I’ll post the articles here every day. Let me know what you think.

After about 24 hours of traveling we finally landed Friday night. The usual flight delays and hotel reservation mixups extended the trip. After a few hours of sleep, I couldn’t sleep much more, so I was hoping THE hotel’s info channel could help me sleep. It couldn’t, but I saw something interesting. Three of the convention rooms were already occupied by Citrix, one of them is the press center. I decided to go and check out the convention area. The place is huge. Walking around in the convention area I felt like a child. Everything was big, the mirrors on the wall, the pot with the plants, the trash cans, the chair and about 6 meters (20 ft) to the ceiling. Unfortunately the press center wasn’t opened yet and I didn’t want to interrupt the official Citrix lunch.

I’m Now Officially An eDad!

Yes finally. The night between Saturday and Sunday at 3.18 am exactly my wife gave birth to our first child, a boy!

Everything went relatively smoothly and we are all doing very well, though a few hours of sleep would be nice Our son is 54 cm tall and weighs 3,590 grams (about 8 lbs.)

So my dear readers expect very few posts the next couple of days. However in about two weeks I will be blogging from the Citrix iForum in Las Vegas, so if anyone of you are in that area from October 19-25 I would love to meet you.

10 Things To Learn From The World’s Best PowerPoint Presentations

Several months ago SlideShare launched a presentation contest. The goal was to find the World’s Best Presentation. The presentations were judged by top presentation gurus and the viewers (us, you and me).

The judges and top presentation gurus were Guy Kawasaki, Bert Decker, Garr Reynolds and Jerry Weissman.

Now I’ve created my share of presentations and I’ve been really proud of most of them… but these WAUW! Looking through the contributions you will quickly notice that they have a lot in common.

I recently created a slide show inspired by these presentations and the feedback was very positive. The audience told me they felt “provoked” to listen to me talk, instead of reading page after page of bullets.

The Paperless Book - A Guide To eBooks And Audiobooks

Here’s an idea: You’ve probably already using your iPod or Mp3-player (from now on I’ll call it iPod, even though I use a Creative Zen Vision:M, its shorter!) on the train or plane, in the car or on your bike, but why not let Stephen King read his latest book for you? Or perhaps you prefer Alan Greenspan and Bill Clinton or Sara Gruen and Julia Sweeney? This is already possible and you don’t even need an iPod for it.

You can sit at home and listen to the audiobooks in the couch in front of your Dali speakers. Audiobooks aren’t a new invention. I used to listen to Tintin (Belgian detective comic by Hergé) on cassette tapes. Usually read by the author himself or by another with a great recording voice. Of course, the tapes were in Danish in my case, since I borrowed it from the children’s department at my local library. Because of the internet and digital mp3 music it is only natural that audiobooks are converted into media files, like mp3 and ebooks. I Can Has Cheezburger - Off Topic Friday

Many of you know the site “I Can Has Cheezburger“. If you don’t you are missing one of the internet’s phenomenons. The site posted the first picture January 11, 2007, but is already very well-known in the StumbleUpon-sphere, among cat lovers and “funny email senders”.It all started with the picture to the right, which apparently made the creators, Cheezburger and Tofuburger laugh for 73.5 minutes. The cat is called Happycat and is used by a Russian cat food company.

Tofu created this answer and several other quickly followed. These pictures are called “lolcats” or cat macros. They were invented several years ago on various forums, which every Caturday (Saturday) featured a new weird cat picture. “I Can Has Cheezburger” was the first site to tag and collect them.

Updating To Wordpress 2.3 My Experience

I just updated my blogs to Wordpress 2.3. I know that some of you will be cautious, but I tried with one of my lesser known (!) blogs first and it went very smoothly. No errors or major problems. I deactivated all my plugins and replaced all files on my server with the new Wordpress 2.3 files.

Then I ran the upgrade script and that was it. Of course my blog looked weird without the plugins activated. I activated the relevant plugins and downloaded the ones that needed an upgrade. It is a nice feature in Wordpress 2.3. It shows which plugins that needs to be upgraded. It would be great if I could just click and they would update, you still have to download, unzip and upload, unless…

Life’s Too Short For The Wrong Job

This week’s “Off-topic” topic is a series of pictures from a German ad-campaign for a job database. I don’t think the pictures need any explanation.

BlogRush - 5 Ways To Get The Most Of It

BlogRush. Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last week, you probably already know what I’m talking about. I will however spend a couple of words explaining what it’s all about and how to get it.

BlogRush is very similar to BlogBurst, except everyone can instantly get access to BlogRush and everybody has written about it. The whole concept of BlogRush is pretty simple, you place a widget on your blog showing articles from other blogs within your blog’s topic. You earn syndication credit each time the widget is loaded, used or by referring users. (*COUGH*Sign up here for BlogRush*COUGH*). Each credit represents a widget on another blog.

Now how can you get the most out of Blogrush?

Show Me Your Desktop, Jennifer Laycock

This week it’s Jennifer Laycock from Search Engine Guide, Bento Yum (Bento Boxes) and The Lactivist’s turn to Show Me Your Desktop. Jennifer wrote the first e-book about blogging I read. The e-book is called Zero cash, A little talent and 30 days. She explains how she started The Lactivist from scrath using viral marketing, CafePress, ads, SEO and a lot more. I can highly recommend it.

She is also one of the skilled editors behind Search Engine Guide. She has certainly helped me understand how important viral marketing is for your blog or site.

If you can guess what Jennifer’s favourite program is, I’ll buy you a beer, root or lager, you pick.

If you missed last week’s interview with Paula Neal Mooney, don’t worry you can still make it.

Logo Designer Celebrates 1 Year Anniversary With $4,000 Prize Draw

My good blogging-friend, Show Me Your Desktop-participant, designer extra-ordinaire and star blogger, David Airey is celebrating his one year anniversary with a $4,000 prize draw.

David is an Irish logo designer living in exile in Edinburgh, Scotland. I reckon, he found out that Pure Pot Still whisky isn’t as good as Single Malt. I can’t blame him

The prizes are amazing. David has managed to get a lot of sponsored prizes. I have to admit the gold award prize is simply mouth-watering. If you are interested in participating in his $4,000 contest, you can find it on David’s blog.
