The Beta News 2 Year Anniversary - Contest Coming Up

January 29, 2008

I almost completely forgot it, but this week it’s exactly two years ago I wrote my first blog post ever. It started out with www.petersen-inc.dk, which was supposed to be a family site with my resume and some private photos, but after a couple of years, I read about Wordpress and blogging, so I thought I’d try that.

Then last summer I moved to another domain - www.thebetanews.com. Read more

January 27, 2008

According to several rumours and pirate-sites Windows 7 Milestone 1 is available as a torrent.Windows 7

The developer build of Windows 7 was released to a select few a couple of days ago, but now it’s already available on several torrent sites.

However several of the pirated images are empty ISO-files, so the question is. Is Windows 7 leaked or is it just fakes? Read more

Friday is beta-weekend and I’m on one hell of a blogging mood. I’m working on the new theme (yes still) and I’m preparing a new round of Show Me Your Desktop interviews.

I’ve got some really impressive names so far. Dilbert creator Scott Adams, Shoemoney, Fake Steve Jobs, Larissa Meek, Lisa Brewster and Sarah Meyers just to name a few.

So we are in for a real treat this in Show Me Your Desktop season 2.

Links That Could Be Links

January 24, 2008

I’m insanely busy getting the new theme up and running. What do you think of it so far?

Just because I’m busy setting up the theme and preparing my first contest on The Beta News, you shouldn’t be cheated of the great links I’ve found for you.

First a premiere of Leo Babauta from ZenHabits  newest blog “Write To Done”. It’s a great place to start for people like me, who sometimes tend to write too long paragraphs, instead of a few sentences. It’s aimed at writers of all kinds. If you want to know more about Leo, remember his interview, Show Me Your Desktop, Leo Babuata.

Emma from It’s Write Now is running a contest. All you have to do is sign up to her feed and mail the code word to her. My upcoming contest is partly based on that idea. A running contest is a great idea.

I just wrote a post about the “fight” between video game developer Electronic Arts and Fox Network. I’m shocked at, how poorly Fox researches their stories. So many inaccuracies and journalists talking about a video game they haven’t played.

Windows Vista SP1 To Be Released February 15th?

January 23, 2008

According to Digitimes.com’s article about the tight DRAM supply in the second half of 2008. Nanya Technologies’ spokeman Pei-lin Pai talks about the short supply of DRAM.That’s not the interesting news in the story. Later on in the article he says:

But the PC market will rebound in the second quarter, he said. The launch of an updated version of Microsoft Vista on February 15, if its prices do not go up too much compared to its previous version, may help boost DRAM sales, Pai added.

Now this is much more interesting. Read more

Updates On The Beta News

January 23, 2008

Today I bought a new theme. I won’t go into details about which one yet and I’m certain that some of you might recognise it.

While I’m implementing the theme with all the new fancy new you stuff, you might experience a couple of changes while browsing The Beta News. This is not your computer or browser acting up, but just me installing the new theme.

To celebrate the new theme I’m launching a contest, but more about that later too.

For now just please be patient and The Beta News will look much better.

Virtual Worlds For Kids Are The Next Web 2.0 Money Maker

January 22, 2008

As some of you might know I became a father for the first time about 3½ month ago. Now I’ve played Ultima Online,webkinz_logo_lrg.jpg Everquest 1+2 and seen MySpace.com grow. What will my son see? Will he spend his pocket money on things in a virtual world?

I think there’s a gold fever in the virtual world industry. Everybody wants to get a piece of the golden tweens (8-12 years) segment.

According to a report from eMarketer.com, 20 million American kids between 3 and 17 years will be a part of a virtual world by 2011. The big players on the market have already seen that and I guess that’s why Disney spent $350 million last August on the arctic ClubPenguin.com. For $5.95 your tween child can enjoy the life in his or her custom made igloo, if they aren’t bsy chatting with their friends on the ice.

Apparently $5.95 per month isn’t a problem for many parents. Every month the PenguinClub gets five million unique visits. Webkinz grew from less than 1 million to over 6 million last year. Read more
