eBay Buys StumbleUpon -Price $75 Million Cash

May 31, 2007

As previously reported eBay has bought StumbleUpon for $75 million.

According to eBay: “StumbleUpon is a great fit within our goal of pioneering new communities based on commerce and sustained by trust.â€? StumbleUpon has grown 150% each year, with over 5 million recommendations and 2,3 million users. eBay doesn’t plan on changing anything yet, but will wait and see what happens.

You can read the eBay’s press release here.

Personally I think this is one of the smartest deals this year. I’ve been a happy StumbleUpon user for several years. My 2 years anniversay is in two weeks. Feel free to add me: dennisbp to your friends list.

Some might call it a time waster, but it is a good time waster. Yes, you can get side tracked, but it is also good for blog research. How do you use StumbleUpon?

Three Start-ups That Are Connected In Some Crazy Way

May 30, 2007

These three start-ups are actually connected in some abstract way.

Allow me to explain.

famfridge Three Start-ups That Are Connected In Some Crazy Way

First we have to gather the family. “The modern family is finding it increasingly difficult to stay organized. With both parents working full-time jobs and children with just as hectic schedules, staying in-step with each other is a daunting task.” According to famFridge they will bring families closer together through technology. There are no more details, they do have a blog with a few family tips, but nothing on the famFridge-project. I signed up for the newsletter so lets see what happens. (Oh and notice The Official Web 2.0 desing on the page and the blog ;) )

Blogging Tips - SEO

May 30, 2007

This is part three of my blogging tips project - Today: SEO

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is a relatively new thing for me. Basically its about how you make your blog ranked number one in a search engine. It is a very big topic and I don’t know very much about it yet, but I’ve collected a few links.

Besides that, I’m using a plugin that handles some of this for me. You can find it here

Palm to Announce New Mobile Device on May 30

May 30, 2007

logo_palm.gif

Now this sounds really interesting. My first PDA was a Palm III, which I bought in 1998. A year later I upgraded it to a Palm V. With the Palm V I could connect to my cell phone through infrared and update AvantGo. Man, that was advanced! Did you ever own a Palm? What do you miss the most?

“Jeff Hawkins, founder of Palm Inc. will host a live video webcast today, May 30, to describe a new category of mobile device. The webcast will follow the announcement of this new product at the D: All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, California.

Hawkins will discuss Palm’s vision for this new category and demonstrate the new product’s capabilities, followed by a Q&A session.

Update: The gadget Hawkins will annouce is a thingy with the codename: “Hawk”, with the real name “Foleo”. It is not a laptop or a smartphone, neither Tungsten nor Treo. It is a smartphone companion. Foleo has a full QWERTY keyboard and a large LCD. It pairs with your smartphone through Bluetooth. It will be the first device to feature Palm’s new Linux-based OS. It can run applications independently from your smartphone. CrunchGear has the full story on Palm’s Foleo.

Microsoft has annouced it first surface computing product - Microsoft Surface.

The technology behind it was presented last year by Jefferson Han, the founder of Perceptivepixel, but now Microsoft has given it a name and adopted the technology.

Direct Interaction

Microsoft gives examples of ordering a drink during a meal with just the tap of a finger and quickly browsing through music and dragging favorite songs onto a personal playlist by moving a finger across the table.

10 Ways to Generate Traffic

May 29, 2007

From time to time I come across different blogs that shows you how to generate more traffic. I recently stumbled upon Yaro Starak’s blog and found some rather interesting tips. He is about to launch his Blog Mastermind-program, which I will give you a preview of here:
“In every bloggers life comes a special day - the day they first launch a new blog. Now unless you went out and purchased someone else’s blog chances are your blog launched with only one very loyal reader - you. Maybe a few days later you received a few hits when you told your sister, father, girlfriend and best friend about your new blog but that’s about as far you went when it comes to finding readers.

Here are the top 10 techniques new bloggers can use to find readers. These are tips specifically for new bloggers, those people who have next-to-no audience at the moment and want to get the ball rolling.

It helps if you work on this list from top to bottom as each technique builds on the previous step to help you create momentum. Eventually once you establish enough momentum you gain what is called “traction”, which is a large enough audience base (about 500 readers a day is good) that you no longer have to work too hard on finding new readers. Instead your current loyal readers do the work for you through word of mouth.

No More Blank Notification Mails!

May 28, 2007

Since I upgraded to Wordpress 2.2 I’ve received blank notification mails everytime someone posted a comment. It has driven me…well almost crazy, but finally I found out what was wrong. My Wordpress Backup-plugin caused the problem. I am not sure why, but I’ve updated the plugin and now everything is running smoothly again. My sincere apologies for sending out blank notification emails to my comment subscribers. It is all good again!
